The Northern Railway has announced that train services from Ramban to Reasi, passing over the world's highest railway bridge on the Chenab River, will start soon. According to officials, the exact date of the inauguration is yet to be confirmed. This bridge in the Jammu and Kashmir region stands 359 meters (about 109 feet) above the Chenab River—making it taller than the Eiffel Tower by about 35 meters.
The bridge connects the Kashmir Valley to the Indian Railway network, as a part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project.
Currently, trains run from Kanyakumari to Katra and from Baramulla to Sangaldan in the Kashmir Valley. The USBRL project, which will be completed by the end of this year, has been ongoing for several years. The first phase of the project, a 118-kilometre section from Qazigund to Baramulla, opened in October 2009.
The subsequent phases included an 18-kilometre section from Banihal to Qazigund in June 2013 and a 25-kilometre section from Udhampur to Katra in July 2014. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the latest addition, a 48.1-kilometer section from Banihal to Sangaldan, on February 20, 2024.
In addition to the beautiful railway journey, Kashmir offers many other tourist attractions. Visitors can explore the beautiful Dal Lake in Srinagar, known for its houseboats and Shikara rides. The Mughal Gardens, landscapes and historical significance are another must-visit. Adventure enthusiasts can enjoy activities like skiing in Gulmarg and trekking in Pahalgam.
The region's rich culture, scenic beauty, and warm hospitality make it a perfect destination for travellers. Kashmir is also renowned for its unique handicrafts, including Pashmina shawls, hand-knotted carpets, and intricately designed wooden furniture. The bustling markets of Srinagar, like Lal Chowk and Polo View Market, are great places to shop for these items. Besides, this traditional Kashmiri feast is a multi-course meal featuring dishes like Rogan Josh, Yakhni, and Gushtaba. Kashmiri tea Kahwa is another traditional delicacy which must be tried here.
