Travelling to Mizoram has become convenient as train operations have been started on a new section of track in India’s northeastern region, linking Bhairabi and Hortoki. This is a significant development because it’s part of a larger project to connect Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, to the railway network for the first time. It also makes it the fourth capital city in the northeast to get train connectivity.

The newly opened 16.7km stretch of track is part of the Bhairabi-Sairang New Line Railway Project. This project will eventually span 51.38km and is designed to improve connectivity in the area. The Commissioner of Railway Safety, Sumeet Singhal, has approved this section for freight and passenger trains. Trains on this new line can travel up to 75km/h.

The entire project is divided into four sections, with Bhairabi to Hortoki being the first one now operational. The remaining sections – Hortoki to Kawnpui, Kawnpui to Mualkhang, and Mualkhang to Sairang – are still under construction, but over 90 per cent of the work is already completed.

This new rail link will make travel more convenient for those planning a trip to Aizawl.

Aizawl, nestled in the scenic hills of Mizoram, is known for its beautiful landscapes and vibrant local culture. The city offers attractions such as the Mizoram State Museum, the Durtlang Hills, and the picturesque Vantawng Falls. This new train connection is likely to enhance tourism and provide easier access to this charming destination.

Visitors can explore the local markets, such as Bara Bazar, for unique crafts and local products. The city is also home to several notable attractions like the serene Tamdil Lake and the historic Mizo National Museum, which offers insights into the region’s rich history and traditions. The cool climate and green surroundings make Aizawl a refreshing escape for exploring the scenic landscapes of Mizoram.
