Maharashtra has unveiled a new initiative to enhance its tourism sector by introducing river cruises as a key feature of its updated tourism policy. This initiative leverages the state’s extensive river network, including the Narmada, Vashishti, and Godavari rivers, to create unique travel experiences. To support this, the state plans to build new ports along the Konkan coast, aiming to establish a more efficient and accessible cruise service for tourists. This move is part of a broader strategy to boost Maharashtra’s tourism and hospitality industries, encouraging both domestic and international visitors.

The government’s policy includes a range of incentives designed to attract significant investment in the tourism sector. For the current fiscal year, the state is offering incentives worth ₹1,666 crore, with similar amounts projected for the next decade. The goal is to draw in ₹1 lakh crore in investments over this period. These incentives include capital investment benefits of 15-20 per cent or ₹15-20 crore, whichever is lower. Additionally, the policy offers substantial exemptions on state taxes such as SGST, electricity duty, electricity tariffs, and stamp duty, depending on the project's eligibility period, which can range from 5 to 15 years. These financial incentives are aimed at reducing the entry barriers for businesses looking to invest in Maharashtra’s tourism sector, particularly in the emerging niche of river cruise tourism.

A Boost To River Tourism

River cruise tourism is gaining traction globally, and Maharashtra is positioning itself to tap into this growing market. The state’s diverse river systems, including the Narmada, Godavari, Vashishti, Savitri, Krishna, and Tapi, provide a unique opportunity to develop this sector. Unlike sea cruises, river cruises can operate year-round, offering a consistent attraction for tourists. The Nandurbar to Statue of Unity route is expected to be one of the premier offerings, with additional routes planned in the Konkan and Nashik regions. These cruises will not only highlight the natural beauty of Maharashtra but also provide an opportunity to showcase the state’s rich cultural heritage.

The Maharashtra government envisions these cruises as a way to immerse travelers in the region’s unique hospitality. Passengers will have the chance to explore local villages, historical sites, and experience traditional Maharashtrian cuisine and arts along the riverbanks. Moreover, the cruises will incorporate ecotourism elements, allowing tourists to enjoy activities like bird watching, nature walks, and visits to conservation areas, as the rivers flow through various wildlife sanctuaries. This blend of cultural and ecological tourism is expected to make Maharashtra a distinctive destination for travelers seeking both adventure and cultural enrichment.
