Among the many historic milestones trailed by the Kappad Beach of Kerala, a recent addition on its mantle of accolades has been the prestigious Blue Flag certification. A visit to Kozhikode is incomplete without a visit to the legendary Kappad Beach. Among other things, the beach is famous for its tranquillity and rock that protrudes into the sea. The golden sand and fishing hamlets in the vicinity also add to its peacefulness.
The Blue Flag certification is a prestigious eco-label awarded to beaches, marinas and sustainable boat tourism operators. The title is conferred only when you meet some prerequisites like a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety and accessibility criterias. A jury that includes members of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), Denmark-based NGO Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) decides the allocation of the Blue Flag.
In India, there are a total of eight beaches that enjoy the Blue Certificate. Among them are Golden Beach in Odisha, Shivrajpur Beach in Gujarat, Kappad Beach in Kerala, Ghoghla Beach in Diu, Radhanagar Beach in Andaman and Nicobar, Kasarkod Beach in Karnataka, Padubidri Beach in Karnataka, and Rushikonda Beach in Andhra Pradesh.
Kappad Beach in Kerala is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and breathtaking views. This spot holds historical significance as it is where Vasco da Gama landed in India in 1498. It was a momentous event that marked the beginning of European trade and colonialism in the country. Today, visitors can see a small stone monument commemorating this event and reflecting on its historical importance. The Kappad Backwaters offer a stunning view of interconnected lagoons, lakes, and canals, making for an unforgettable experience for visitors. For a calm boat ride, you can head to the Kallai River and Elathur Channel, where the gentle sway of the water adds to the tranquillity. Pookot Lake is located nearby - a beautiful freshwater oasis surrounded by lush greenery, situated halfway from Calicut. Nature enthusiasts can visit the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, just 25 km from the beach and home to both resident and migratory bird species. Here, amidst the serene surroundings, you can observe a diverse range of avian life, including gulls, sandpipers, terns, and whimbrels. Thusharagiri Waterfalls, about 50 km from Kozhikode, is another popular tourist destination known for its cascading waters and lush green surroundings.
