Dehradun is all set to become home to India's longest ropeway system, linking the city with Mussoorie. Soon, tourists will be able to reach Mussoorie from Dehradun in 15 minutes. Construction of a new ropeway system connecting the two cities is underway and will cut down travel time from one hour thirty minutes to a mere 15 minutes.

The 5.5 km long Dehradun Mussoorie Ropeway Project (DMRP), which will reduce the 33 km driving distance between the two cities, has been undertaken by the Mussoorie Sky Car Company Pvt, a consortium led by FIL Industries. Phase 1 of this INR 300 crore mono-cable ropeway project is set to be ready by September 2026.

The Facilities

This new ropeway will have 10-seater cabins, fully enclosed and ventilated with automatic doors. Up to 1,300 passengers can be accommodated inside these cabins per-hour-per-direction. One of the notable things that this new system will do is reduce traffic congestion for locals and tourists. During peak festive seasons, the traffic can get out of hand, and this all-weather ropeway, which will be functional throughout the year, will manage that effectively.

Group Director of FIL Industries Limited, Owais Altaf Syed, said, "We are very excited to launch this mega ropeway project in the state of Uttarakhand, FIL Industries' second ropeway project in India, after our very successfully running Skyview by Empyrean project in Patnitop, Jammu. The Mussoorie-Dehradun sustainable ropeway project is being built with state-of-the-art, world-class infrastructure. Once ready, it will not only provide a source of employment and bring in revenue to the state but also attract tourists from across the world, contributing considerably to the state GDP."

Once finished, this new project is set to be a game-changer in Uttarakhand. The ropeway will be built for both tourism and urban mobility between these Uttarakhand cities. The project is also said to integrate infrastructure development, which will include hospitality, food and beverages, and retail facilities to boost the local economies of Dehradun and Mussoorie.
