Surat Airport recently unveiled its New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB), marking a substantial advancement in size and cultural design. This development is set to enhance the travel experience for all passengers greatly.
The new terminal, built at a cost exceeding INR 150 crores, is tailored to serve 1,200 domestic and 600 international passengers during busy times. Moreover, plans allow for accommodating up to 3,000 passengers during peak hours, while the annual handling capacity is set to rise to 55 lakh passengers.
Amid the upgrade of Surat Airport, the Union cabinet has also declared it an international airport, positioning it as a hub for global travellers and facilitating smoother export-import processes, particularly for the thriving diamond and textile industries. This move is expected to unlock substantial economic potential, establish Surat as a critical player in global aviation, foster regional prosperity, attract foreign investment, and strengthen diplomatic connections. Anticipated increases in passenger and cargo operations highlight the pivotal role Surat Airport's international status will play in driving regional development.
The terminal building's design comprises Surat City's rich heritage, encapsulating the region's essence within its interior and exterior. This approach gives visitors a unique sense of place upon entering the terminal. Serving as Surat City's main gateway, the building merges modern functionality with local culture. The upgraded terminal's facade pays homage to the traditional woodwork seen in the old houses of the 'Rander' region, adding a touch of local tradition to enhance the passenger experience.
The new terminal building goes beyond its visual appeal, prioritising environmental consciousness. Several sustainability features are thoughtfully integrated, such as a double-insulated roofing system, energy-efficient canopies, low heat gain double-glazing units, rainwater harvesting, water treatment, and sewage treatment plants.
Furthermore, recycled water is utilised for landscaping, actively contributing to water conservation. Including a solar power plant powerfully underscores the dedication to eco-friendly practices, positioning the airport as a benchmark for sustainable and responsible infrastructure development.
