Starting October 17, Air India has revised its baggage policy for flights to Europe and the UK. Passengers in economy class will now face additional charges to check in a second bag.
The updated policy introduces fare categories, or "families," in economy class. The most economical option, the "value" fare, includes one checked bag weighing up to 23 kg. For those needing to check in an extra bag, options include upgrading to a higher fare class or paying an additional fee, beginning at INR 4,000 for a one-way trip.
Air India’s new approach aligns with the baggage policies of many international airlines. For instance:
Lufthansa: Economy passengers are allowed only one checked bag by default.
British Airways: Offers multiple fare levels, with some including allowances for two checked bags depending on the ticket type.
This change shifts Air India away from its earlier model, where it offered more generous baggage allowances to attract passengers despite alleged service challenges like delayed flights or subpar cabin experience.
The revised baggage policy is part of Air India’s larger effort to modernise its operations and align with global standards. The airline has been transforming post-privatisation to improve service quality, efficiency, and overall passenger experience. With 264 weekly flights connecting India to Europe and the UK, these routes are crucial for Air India’s operations, and this move is seen as a step towards becoming a more globally competitive carrier.
Travellers must choose their fare category carefully based on their baggage needs. While the value fare remains affordable, those planning extended stays or travelling with additional luggage may need to budget for extra fees or a higher fare class.
