“Removing the Gaze” by Max Neumann, Kolkata

Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata, in association with Seagull Books, will be hosting Max Neumann's "Removing the Gaze" in March. Neumann is a significant representative of German figuration. He transforms the human figure into an abstract symbol, distilling his compositions to their core. His visual vocabulary is derived from a variety of sources, including drawings, paintings, picture magazines, newspapers, and other media. Neumann's renderings of heads and bodies, photographed and copied in newspapers or books, cut out, waxed, and translated from one surface to another, exist in an unrooted space. The artist leaves it up to the observer to fill in the blanks and create imaginative stories. Find out more here.

When: February 8 to March 9, 3 pm to 6.30 pm daily, excluding Sundays and public holidays.

Where: Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, Park Mansions, Gate 4, 57A, Park Street, Kolkata
