The Nilgiris landcape, especially Ooty, is known for stunning monsoon vistas. If you are in the area, or are planning a trip soon, here is a word of caution. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an "orange alert" for Ooty, forecasting very heavy rainfall in the town from May 18-20. The Nilgiris district administration is urging people, especially tourists, to avoid visiting the hill station during this period of inclement weather.

Here Come The Rains

Following a disaster preparedness meeting with officials from various government departments in Udhagamandalam on May 16, Nilgiris District Collector M Aruna stated that the IMD had issued the "orange alert," indicating very heavy rain of 6 cm-20 cm on May 18, 19, and 20. She advised tourists to cancel travel plans to the hill resort during this period. The District Collector has urged tourists to avoid travelling to the Nilgiris between Saturday, May 18 to Monday, May 20 due to heavy rain expected in the district.

M. Aruna also stated that areas vulnerable to flooding and landslips had been identified across the district, and 3,500 first responders will be on high alert during the weekend.

If you are among those planning to travel to the Nilgiris, heed the warning from officials who are asking travellers to reconsider. They have however assured that steps have been taken to ensure the safety of those who do decide to brave the inclement weather. “Those coming here should have all the required protection. If possible you can avoid travelling here during this period,“ state officials informed reporters after leading a meeting with the Revenue, Police, and Fire and Rescue Services departments to discuss preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season in the state.

The IMD has also said that Kerala and Mahe are likely to get isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.5 mm) around this time.
