A pristine lake, lush forest and high fells&mdashno wonder Windermere caught the fancy of poet William Wordsworth. And now the region has an attraction that best displays the essence of the Lakeland. &lsquoWindermere Jetty, Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories&rsquo, worth £20 million, showcases the area&rsquos scenic beauty and history.
It is also one of the first contemporary buildings built on the banks of Lake Windermere in 50 years. Once you are there, opt for a heritage boat trip aboard Osprey, a fully-restored Edwardian steam launch. Open from 10 am to 5 pm (March to October) and 10.30 am to 4 pm (November to February), adult tickets cost £9 and entry is free for children under four.
