In an iconic marriage of tradition and modernity, Taj Connemara completed its almost two-year long renovation and reopened in Chennai over the weekend. Named after Lord Connemara, the then governor of Madras, this century-old property is part of the city&rsquos colonial heritage - a place where the British relaxed, indulged and enjoyed.

Today, the property has been refurbished with a classic colonial influence, with interiors featuring wooden carvings from the Mahabalipuram temples. Taj Connemara&rsquos original Art Deco fa&ccedilade has been well preserved and stands strong. A grand wooden staircase with South Indian stonework leads guests to the lobby.

The 147 well-appointed suites, dotted along the Tower and the Heritage Wings, come with vintage designs and four-poster beds. The eateries at Taj have a 19th-century club-like feel. The city&rsquos first licensed bar, The Lady Connemara Bar & Lounge, has been redesigned in a similar fashion. At Verandah, their all-day diner, guests can choose from a host of dishes inspired from the royal kitchen of the Nawab of Arcot and Anglo-Indian cuisine. Their regional delicacies are reminiscent of erstwhile Madras. For an authentic Chettinad feast, alfresco-style Raintree is the way to go. Taj Connemara allows guests to indulge in relaxing sessions at the Jiva Spa or a heritage walk along the hotel. For a peak into the colonial era, the hotel organises the timeless tradition of the 'English Afternoon Tea'.
