South Africa Starts E-visa for Indians

South Africa is offering an online visa on trial basis for Indian passport holders
Published on

The Tourism Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane has recently announced an online visa facility for Indian passport holders among other things. This would greatly increase the ease of access for Indian tourists. While still on a trial basis, the process should go into full effect by April 1, 2020. The trial period should help iron out technological glitches and ease the process of  putting the documents through the portal.

South Africa is famous for its wildlife reserves and the big five, its bunny chow, braai (barbeque) and pap (cornmeal porridge) and its museums and natural history. A popular spot for Indian tourists, the average length of stay for travellers rose by 8 per cent in the first half of 2019. South Africa estimates that the Indian arrivals will grow to one lakh in 202. Given such a positive response, the country is also looking into multiple-entry visas for Indians and fast track the visa process of the Indian travellers who already have the US or Schengen Visa.

The country is also considering a direct flight between Mumbai and South Africa. Currently, there are no direct flights from India and most flights are via Dubai. The country is open to airlines looking to fly directly and would discuss proposals with the Indian government readily.
