Odisha Implements Strict COVID-19 Regulations in Puri

With a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the state, the Odisha government is enforcing strict regulations for the containment of the pandemic, including keeping the famous Jagannath Temple in Puri closed on Sundays.

Over the past few months, many states in India are seeing an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases. Although strict lockdown is not yet being contemplated, most states are issuing situation-based regulatory guidelines. In Odisha, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) of Puri has decided to undertake a thorough cleaning and disinfection of the temple premises every Sunday. Hence, the temple will remain closed to visitors every Sunday until further notice, the local media reported recently.

SJTA took the decision after discussing with the Chhattisha Nijog (priests or servitors who conduct the rituals).

According to media reports, the city administration has also issued a set of protocols for the servitors and visitors to the temple.

While arrangements have been made by the SJTA for vaccination for the servitors and their family members, visitors will have to adhere to all hygiene regulations, including wearing masks at all times, sanitizing hands, and maintaining safe distancing norms inside and outside the temple.

Meanwhile, starting early March this year, local residents of Puri have been undertaking &lsquoBada Danda Seva&rsquo every Saturday to keep the pilgrim route around the temple free from garbage. Bada Danda is the wide road which connects the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple and along which the chariots of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra travel during the famous Rathayatra festival.
