NYCS Central Park Is Getting A $150 Million Makeover

Central Park is one of the landmark sites that has always been on the itinerary of every New York City tourist. Visitors to the &lsquoBig Apple&rsquo are in for a ride as this Manhattan pride is all set to receive a $150 million makeover.

The Central Park Conservancy announced a massive restoration of the area, which includes the installation of a brand new pool and an ice skating rink. The new pool will replace the existing Lasker pool which was first built in 1966. Plans are underway for a broadwalk that will double as a skating ribbon during winters. Other recreational facilities will also be built on the east side of the site which will be open throughout the year.

Under the current project, the concrete barrier that separates Harlem Meer from the picturesque Ravine will be removed so that water can directly run through Ravine and reach Meer. While these restoration efforts will be limited to the northern and eastern end of the central park, a major part of the repair work is also expected to take place in the west of Fifth Avenue and south of 100th street. 

The refurbishment project is a joint collaboration between the Parks department and the Central Park Conservancy. With an investment of $150 million, this one of the largest restoration projects so far. While the city has set aside $50 million for the project, the Central Park Conservancy has decided to raise $100 million for the design and construction. 

The renovation project is slated to begin in 2021 and is expected to open for public in 2024.
