A Maritime Heritage Complex is Coming Up in Gujarat

The complex will not only showcase Indias maritime heritage but also themed tourist facilities

Located about 80km from Ahmedabad is Lothal. Part of the Indus Valley Civilisation, it was a port city which existed over 4500 years ago. Excavations have revealed remains of an artificial dock which was likely connected to an old course of the Sabarmati River and many other proof of a flourishing urban city here.

The Union Ministry of Culture, in deference to the memory of the ancient port city, has decided to build a National Maritime Heritage Complex here. The museum will showcase the maritime heritage of India from ancient to modern times.

Recently, the ministry signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways &lsquoCooperation in Development of National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat&rsquo. The museum will have an edutainment approach and use the latest technology.

According to the plan, the NMHC will be spread over 400 acres and will include National Maritime Heritage Museum, Light House Museum, Heritage Theme Park, Maritime Institute etc., which would be developed in a phased manner. There will be pavilions to showcase the artefacts or maritime heritage of the respective states and union territories. There will be tourist facilities such as maritime themed hotels and eco-resorts.

Architect Hafeez Contractor has been selected as the Principal Project Consultant, according to media reports.
