Travellers taking the Yamuna Expressway have to install the &lsquoHighway Saathi&rsquo application on their phones. People travelling anywhere between Greater Noida and Agra via Yamuna Expressway will be allowed entry only on showing the downloaded app at both the checking points of the route.

Road safety officials made this app a necessary protocol to prevent road accidents and help drivers be more aware of the safety precautions while driving on the highway. In an announcement, Dr. Anuveer Singh, CEO of Yamuna authority, said, &ldquoThe Highway Saathi app has been made mandatory for security reasons.&rdquo

Highway Saathi is an android driver solutions app that is specifically designed to provide information regarding highway accidents, traffic jams, and weather reports. The app allows users to pay toll taxes digitally through card payments and e-wallets like Paytm, Mobikwik, GPay, Airtel Money, etc.

Drivers can retrieve information with regards to estimated journey time, contacts of emergency services, congestion spots, speed limit, road conditions, etc.

The application also offers an &lsquoOn Board Unit&rsquo option for fleet vehicles. When installed on smartphones, fleet owners can track their drivers. The driver safety mobile application was founded and created in 2016.

In an IANS article, it was reported that over 4,900 accidents, 718 deaths, and 7,671 injuries took place on the Yamuna Expressway between 2012 to 2018.

With the alarmingly high rate of accidents, Yamuna Expressway had become a death-trap, and considering the severity of the situation, the central and state government decided to introduce the driver solutions app to prevent fatal accidents.

According to data, most accidents take place due to incorrect driving practices and when people cross the speed limit. Some also point to faults in the expressway design.
