The new decade brings with it access to free Wifi for people in Delhi. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has introduced high-speed free wifi services on the Airport Express line on January 2, 2020. While free wifi was available on the Airport Express, Yellow and Blue line stations earlier, this is the first instance of the service being available inside the moving metros. In fact, this makes India the fourth country to provide such facilities, following Russia, South Korea and China.
Managing Director of DMRC, Mangu Singh, inaugurated the facility and also travelled on the same line from New Delhi station to Dwarka Sector-21 and back.
Promising unlimited usage and 2 Mbps speed, the wifi is easily accessible. Passengers need only turn their wifi services on and select 'METROWIFI_FREE'. Following which, they must enter their phone number for verification. An OTP (One Time Password) will be provided to avail the service instantly.
A connection sprawling over 22.7 kilometres, the Airport Express Line of the Delhi metro was established in 2011, in association with Reliance Infrastructure. However, Reliance Infrastructures quit the partnership in 2013, and DMRC has handled its operations ever since.
The DMRC may introduce free wifi on other metro lines as well. Needless to say, we might find ourselves very busy while commuting.
