With the recent turmoil due to climate change, people are growing more aware of the need for environmental conservation. Many institutes and organisations are urging people to increase participation in activities that ensure more greenery and healthy biodiversity on the planet. Keeping in spirit with the &lsquoGo-green&rsquo theme, Delhi Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has decided to distribute saplings as prasad at educational institutes to celebrate Guru Nanak Dev&rsquos 500th birth anniversary.

This gesture also intends to promote conservation of the environment and tree planting. Success of this move will ensure the growth of 55,000 new environmentally friendly species. Students at nine colleges under the committee (affiliated with Delhi university) will plant their prasad saplings as a part of a project for their final grade. The students are expected to share reports and supporting evidence of the progress of their plant. The likes of mango, amla, jamun, neem and other air-pollutant absorbing species have been included in the sapling varieties.

Sikh students have also been asked to ensure arrangements for rainwater harvesting at their residence and present reports for the same. The DSGMC intends to ensure and increase the participation of the community towards making the world more environment-friendly. Efforts are made by the committee on every Sikh Guru&rsquos birth anniversary to carry out an afforestation drive and tree plantation in 29 education institutes under their jurisdiction.
