Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, located near Kolkata, reopens for visitors, from February 10, 2021. However, guests will have to abide by strict safety protocols and timings.

This popular pilgrimage centre on the west bank of the Hooghly River, had closed in mid- March last year owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. It opened briefly on June 15 and visitors had to go through a strict protocol to enter the premises.

However, after several monks and employees tested positive, the gates were shut on August 2. Although Durga Puja was held on the premises, no visitors were allowed, a first for the organisation since Swami Vivekananda introduced the puja on the premises in 1901.

According to their website, starting February 10, Belur Math will remain open daily from 8.30am to 11am and again from 3.30pm to 5.15 pm. However, the premises will remain shut for visitors on the day of Saraswati Puja (February 16).  Also, devotees are allowed to visit only the four temples&mdashSri Ramakrishna Temple, Sri Sarada Devi Temple, Swami Vivekananda Temple and Swami Brahmananda Temple.

All visitors will have to undergo health screening/thermal screening at the point of entry, wear mask/face cover and follow hand hygiene norms, and maintain at least two metre (6 feet) distance from others.

They have also said that &lsquopranam&rsquo in standing posture only will be allowed &lsquosashtanga&rsquo or sitting &lsquopranam&rsquo in the temples will not be allowed. Sitting or meditation in the temples will not be allowed.

Offerings have to kept at designated places in the temple. Distribution of &lsquobhog&rsquo is also suspended for the time being. For more details regarding the safety protocols and other rules, check here.

It is advisable to check with the Belur Math office (Phone 91-33-2654-5700 / 5701 / 5702 / 5703 / 5391 / 8494 / 9581 / 9681) for the latest rules and timings before planning a visit.
