"The great advantage of a hotel is that it is a refuge from home life"
                                                                           -- George Bernard Shaw

Obviously Shaw didn't envision living in an ex-sewer or a cave. But even if he did, he wouldn't be far from the truth. Because 'centrally-located' is so passé these days, just as a traveller's ever wandering mind, many hotels and resorts have moved on to quirky from the usual. Here are five such quirky hotels from around the world that your travelling feet may want to step into. From living in a refurbished sewer to a carved out hole on the face of a hill, we've got a list for the quirky soul in you.

The Muraka, Maldives
A property of the Conrad Hotels & Resorts, The Muraka is the world's first undersea residence. This deep living calls for an even deeper pocket. How does $50,000 per night sound to you What if we throw in the fact that you'll be sleeping 16ft under sea level in the tropical Alifu Dhaalu Atoll in Maldives Swimming with the sharks and feeding manta rays are a thing of the past, now's the time to let these underwater giants swim over you as you sleep. Sounds fun enough

dasparkhotel, Austria

Home is where the heart is. And in this case the heart remained in large drainpipes. Before you cringe, these are large repurposed drainpipes that are now turned into cosy rooms with double bed, storage, electricity, blankets and light cotton sleeping bags. Saving the best for the last, stay at dasparkhotel and pay what you can afford and what you wish. Really. For reservations dasparkhotel

Kokopelli's Cave Bed & Breakfast, New Mexico (USA)

They took "cave dwelling" to another level with this one. Find yourself 70ft below ground, surrounded by 1700 sq ft of Native American-themed comfort and luxury. Kokopelli's Cave is a carved-out residence, built into the cliffs of Tertiary Ojo Alamo Sandstone. To reach the cave, one has to walk down a slope. We are not complaining as long as the view is good. A two-night stay is minimum and if it works for you, give it a check here

SiloStay, Little River, New Zealand

StayGot a silo for a room No problem. SiloStay is the new definition of fun in Little River as some may find the destination a bit lacklustre. This is where the stay option becomes the reason to travel. SiloStay lets you have a unique stay experience in grain silos, cleverly crafted to give comfort and isolation (if quiet is what you are looking for). If you have had ample quiet and peace, you can go explore the neighbouring areas, go for a little trek perhaps. Check here for booking.

Seaventures Dive Rig, Malaysia

World's only diving rig was once upon a time an oil rig. It still has the allure of a rig but is now a diving rig and resort based in Sabah, Malaysia. Yes, you guessed it right. The location is one of the best diving sites in the world. Don't know how to dive You can learn here and even get yourself certified. If you've had enough of diving (if at all there is such a thing), you can either lounge around or keep yourself busy with mahjong, snooker, table tennis or take a boat ride to nearby locations. For reservations, check Seaventures Dive Rig
