Bheemeshwari
A little over 100km from Bengaluru, Bheemeshwari is a lovely riverine getaway nestling among verdant forests. You may hole up at the nature resorts or go camping in the wild. With an experienced guide, you may hiking in the hills or enjoy a coracle ride in the Cauvery River.
Coorg
The coffee country is about 250km from Bengaluru. Thick forests, coffee estate and spice plantations, make this hill country an ultimate escape from the urban sprawl. While you may choose to stay in the resorts tucked away in the hills and plantations, do visit Madikeri town to sample the Coorgi (Kodava) cuisine.
Jog Falls
Save this for a long weekend break. It may be a tad tiring to drive straight to Jog Falls from Bengaluru (roughly 8.5 hours), so draw up at Shivamogga town (a little over 6 hours journey from Bengaluru) and pay a visit to the famous waterfalls, which is about 2.5 hours away, the next day. Or, you may fly into Mangalore airport and travel the rest of the distance (a little over four hours) by road. The Post monsoon, the four cascades &ndash Raja, Rani, Rocket and Roarer &ndash weave a brilliant symphony as they drop through the verdant hill side, making your journey worth the trouble.
Mangalore
Travelling on a Vistadome railway coach to and from Mangalore is part of the journey itself however, it will take the greater part of day so plan accordingly. Or you may travel by air through the city&rsquos international airport. The headquarters of Dakshina Kannada, one of the key commercial centres of the state, the port city is also home to old temples and churches, magnificent beaches, cuisine and more.
Savandurga
Those who are not keen to go on a long drive or just want a day&rsquos outing, Savandurga may be an answer for you. You may go trekking along the monolithic granite hill or even try a spot of rock climbing. However, only the Biligudda (White hill) trail is open to visitors. Local people advice that do not stay up in the hills after dark as you may encounter wild animals. There are two ancient temples - Savandi Veerabhadraswamy temple and Sree Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy - located at the bottom of the hill. From the top of the hill, you can catch a panoramic view of the surroundings, including the reservoirs and river.
