The best bookshops are not just about stocking great literary works, but also about standout ambience and atmosphere. In our hunt for unique things, we found some bookstores in surprising locations that are far from the ordinary. Here's to browsing books made better by location.

The Paddy Field Bookstore, China

Paddy fields surround this bookstore situated in Xiadi village, Fujian in China. The three-storey bookstore has a rooftop viewing deck, a reading room on the first floor, and a display area on the ground floor. It stocks books on subjects like social sciences and art, on rural education, agricultural civilszations, and the preservation of historic communities. Additionally, it hosts live performances of music and theatre. The space also has private reading nooks, a theatre room, and a café.

Word on the Water, United Kingdom

Word on the Water, a bookstore set up on a&nbspcentury-old Dutch barge in London is a haven for bookworms, filled with orderly rows of well curated old tomes. The space also hosts talks and discussions on politics, arts, feminism, and technology. And the roof hosts open mic nights with musicians and entertainers and the occasional poetry slam or reading event.

El Ateneo Grand Splendid, Argentina

One of the most stunning bookstores in the world is housed in an old yet opulent theatre. After renovation, the structure was transformed into a store selling books, and a music store. The theatre seats were taken out, and bookshelves were put in their place. Customers can now sit everywhere in the building, even in the theatre boxes in the midst of theatre lighting and stage curtains. A café has been set up where the stage used to be. On the same stage where the Argentinean stars of tango previously performed, one may now enjoy coffee and live piano music while reading their latest purchase. The upper level is used for exhibitions and displays, while the basement is reserved for children&rsquos books.

The Last Bookstore, United States

The Last Bookstore is California&rsquos biggest new and used book and record store. The current store, located in a former bank, is spread across 22,000 square feet and has books on two levels, including the former vault. The old bank&rsquos marble pillars and huge ceilings are still present, but there are now bookcases lining the walls and creative book displays, instead of customers and stacks of cash. Most fiction is intentionally disorganized to make the customers search for their perfect read. Its occasional event schedule also includes signings, talks, performances, and various monthly book groups.

Libreria Acqua Alta, Italy

This Venice bookshop takes into its stride continuous flooding that occurs there. It houses its books in bathtubs, boats, and water-resistant containers. Several cramped rooms are piled high with vintage books, periodicals, maps, prints, and more.

Barter Books, England

One of England&rsquos largest second-hand bookstores, Barter Books is located inside the Victorian Alnwick train station, which was in operation until the Alnwick branch line was shut down in 1968. The former station entrance, Parcel Room, central island, and boarding platform are now occupied by Barter Books.&nbspA unique feature of the store is its barter system, which allows customers to trade in their books for credit toward future purchases. A continuously moving model train can be found between the shelves, a rather appealing sight to witness.
