When in Mumbai, you cannot leave without chowing down on the famed Bombay Sandwich. From hurried office-goers, and students rushing to classes, to weary travellers and city families out for fun, no one can or even tries to resist the lure of the scrumptious sandwich. Usually served with a side of bright green coriander-mint chutney, ketchup, or dips which each stall may specialise in, the Bombay Sandwich is a carb-heavy shot in the arm and delivers soul-deep satisfaction.

On offer are layers of mashed, spicey or salty potato, assorted chopped vegetables, or even the plain, finely-diced tomato, tumbled with cottage cheese, or sprinkled with grated cheddar or mozzarella. These are nestled between slices of white bread, toasted, grilled, or simply smeared with butter, and many a time, topped with crunchy sev.

The maximum city has its plate full of sandwich stands dotting its densely built landscape. Each stall is a nerve centre of its local communities' myriad cultures. Here are five iconic sandwich hot spots where you can get your fill.

Jay Sandwich, off Linking Road, outside National College, Bandra west.

It is a favoured haunt of the students from the college next door, the shoppers on Linking Road, and all those in Bandra looking for a tasty and quick meal on the run. The cheese masala toast is an all-time favourite, and the cheese-and-tomato sandwich takes second place. Then come in the pizza, grilled cheese, paneer tikka, vegetable, chilli cheese sandwiches. Jay will toast it to their high-crunch standards, unless you specify otherwise, and slather it with butter because, as we are aware, butter makes life better.

Long loved in this corner of the City of Dreams, sandwiches at Lucky come with a choice of brown bread too. Regular patrons swear by the cheese-filled sandwiches paired with either mashed potatoes, jam, or mayo. There is even a grilled Mexican Cheese, which is another favourite. Along with the spicy green chutney, we had information about a pumpkin sauce we should ask for however, we have still been unable to sample it. You could get lucky

Popular Sandwich, NM Joshi Marg, Lower Parel

This joint, smug in the corporate hub of Lower Parel, has been keeping up the blood sugar levels of many a harried office-goer. Choose from grilled varieties like corn, mushroom, vegetable, cheese, and yes, even chocolate. Added to these are the cottage-cheese sandwiches flavoured with either Chinese-Indian or Mughlai spices. Wash down the crusty deliciousness with one of Popular&rsquos many fresh juices

Last on the list, but right up there with the best of them, are the toasted panini sandwiches at Raju. Served with a double dose of chutney, spicy green, and spicier red, these greasy handfuls of baked dough are stuffed with cheesy goodness. Take your pick from the carb-high deliverances in the form of curry, noodle, or pasta panini. Then there are the crowd-pullers samosa toast and masala cheese toast.
