It won't be an understatement to say that many people live and breathe pizza&mdashone of the most universally loved foods. Whether you make it at home or order it at a restaurant, a good pizza satisfies your taste buds. A 2022 research found that almost 72 per cent of Americans (out of 2000 pizza-loving adults) love the dish so much that they could eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner Let's take you on a journey around the world in seven pizzas.
Naples, Italy Neopolitan
This pizza from Italy, also called Margherita, is baked for about 90 seconds in a wood oven before being topped with a sauce prepared from San Marzano tomatoes, a few shards of fresh Buffalo mozzarella, basil, garlic, and extra virgin olive oil.
New York Plain Slice
This is perhaps the type of pizza we are most accustomed to. The New York pizza is a thin, crispy triangle-shaped slice covered with tomato sauce, melted mozzarella cheese, and additional toppings. For most Americans, New York is the nation's pizza capital.
Turkey Lahmacun
Though there is considerable debate about whether Lahmacun came from Turkey or Armenia, this dish resembles the popular pizza version. The name loosely translates to "meat and dough," and that's exactly what it is&mdasha slice of dough topped with minced beef or lamb. Tomatoes, onions, and herbs are additional typical ingredients.
Japan Okonomiyaki
Compared to the Italian original, this Japanese version of pizza is hardly distinguishable. However, the ingredients vary immensely, including squid, pork, cabbage, and noodles. It is piled, combined, and then cooked in batter. An egg and okonomiyaki sauce, which resembles a sweeter Worcestershire sauce, are then placed on top.
Coca, Spain
Pizza is known as Coca in Spanish. It starts with a flaky crust brushed with olive oil and can be topped with various savoury or sweet ingredients, such as mushrooms, spinach, anchovies, olives, pine nuts, and citrus rind.
Manakish, Lebanon
Pizza enthusiasts will be fascinated to know that Lebanon's take on the meal is typically served for breakfast. Pizza dough is used to make Manakish, seasoned with za'atar (thyme, oregano, and sesame seeds). The pie occasionally also includes cheese and meat.
Rome, Italy Pizza Bianca
This "white pizza" is a dressed-down variation of the Neopolitan form, which is well-liked further south. Pizza Bianca is made with thin dough drizzled with olive oil and coarse salt before being cooked and sliced before serving. It does not include cheese or tomato sauce, the two standard toppings for pizza. Interestingly, this pizza is frequently offered by weight rather than by slice.
