Come autumn, the valley of Kashmir buzzes with tourists taking in the beauty of snow-clad mountains and the glow of burnt-orange chinar leaves. But there is more this heaven-on-earth has in store, especially in November. As an ode to the valley's vibrant culture, the state tourism department will celebrate the Saffron and Houseboat festival in the coming weeks of the month. Here's everything you should know about it.
The Initiative
This twin celebration of the two most unique jewels of Kashmir, saffron and houseboat, has been initiated to attract more tourists to the state. The event that is set to take place in November has grown significantly over the last few years. Tourists from all over the world, who wish to delve deep into the valley's culture, especially look forward to attending this two-week-long fest.
Saffron Festival
The saffron festival unfolds over three days in Kashmir's Pampore&ndashmany cultural events and activities that put saffron to the forefront are organised. The best part about attending this is that it allows visitors to get hands-on authentic saffron directly from the local sellers. Apart from that, many folk dances, music performances, and exhibitions complete the celebration.
Houseboat Festival
Similarly, the houseboat festival also seeks to celebrate and recognise the unique role shikaras have played in putting Kashmir at the top of every traveller's must-visit list. The festival takes place around the iconic glass-like Dal lake. In addition to being an audience to some colourful dance and music performances, you can sail across the lake on the shikaras.
How to reach
Srinagar is well-connected to major cities and is only a two-hour drive from Pampore (where the saffron festival is set to take place).
You can fly to the dreamy city or take a train to Jammu Tawi Railway Station, from where you can hail a private cab for the 273 km long (but picturesque) journey. If you travel by road, ensure to carry valid ID cards, as security checks occur at regular intervals. It is also advised to avoid travelling at night.
The official festival dates have not been announced yet.
