Pune, lodged amidst the Sahyadri hills, is a vibrant city with a rich tapestry of history woven into its very fabric. Aga Khan Palace, which dates to the 19th century, bears witness to the glorious heritage of the region. This architectural wonder boasts expansive lawns surrounding it, as well as enormous halls and lovely Italian-style arches. The majestic palace is well known for its historical importance and structural beauty since, during its earlier years, Mahatma Gandhi and other prominent figures from the freedom movement were imprisoned there. At present, the Gandhi National Memorial Society headquarters are located in the palace.

The Shaniwar Wada is one of the best-known attractions in Pune. In the 18th century, it was the capital of the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire. Although the fort is now in ruins, it is still one of Pune's most popular sites. The fort looks lovely at night when the lights give it an even more splendid appearance.
A museum showcasing the history and culture of the Peshwas, the Shaniwar Wada Museum, is also located inside the fort. Those interested in learning about the history of the Maratha Empire must visit this museum. Delicious local cuisine is served at several restaurants and food stalls outside the complex.

The Empress Garden is a well-known tourist attraction close to Aga Khan Palace, where you visit to experience the marvels of nature up close. Currently well-preserved by the Agri-Horticultural Society of Western India, the Empress Garden was once a favourite among British officials during Queen Victoria’s reign. The hundreds of rare species of flora covered in the fragrant Empress Garden inspire tourists, offering them the ideal chance to get away from the busy metropolis and enjoy peace while taking a stroll in the natural environment. This place is one of a kind because of the flower exhibitions and architecture.

To learn more about Maratha's history, visit Lal Mahal, a structure dating back to 1630. Shivaji spent a significant part of his early years in this place. It is also the same palace where the legendary encounter between Shivaji and Shaista Khan took place, in which the Maratha leader chopped Shaista Khan's finger as he attempted to flee. Shivaji's palace now functions as a tribute to him and is home to several artworks that showcase different moments in his life. Jijamata Garden surrounds Lal Mahal, a great place to relax with the family.

The founder of this museum, Raja Dinkar Kelkar, amassed a huge collection of antiques, artwork, and sculptures. For those who are interested in learning more about Indian history and culture, a visit to the museum is highly recommended.
More than 20,000 artefacts, including jewellery, paintings, sculptures, weapons, and musical instruments, are housed in the museum's collection. The library, with an eclectic collection of books on Indian art and culture, is also a must-visit.
