As winter approaches, many travellers will consider trips to India's high mountain regions. However, it's important to note that several mountain passes and roads close during the colder months due to substantial snowfall and other challenging weather conditions. Therefore, it is advisable to plan your visit to these mountainous areas before they are inaccessible due to winter closures. Most passes and roads shut down from around November till May, depending on the altitude.
The Manali to Leh stretch is an unforgettable road trip every motorcycle enthusiast dreams of experiencing. Starting at nearly 4,000 metres, you'll be surrounded by the majestic Himalayas. One of the most thrilling highlights of this route is the Rohtang Pass, located in Himachal Pradesh. Note that the pass is closed during the winter due to sudden blizzards and landslides.
The Khardung La Pass, located in the northern region of India, holds the distinction of being the second-highest motorable pass in the country. With an elevation of 5,359 metres, this pass serves as a crucial link between the Leh region and the Siachen glaciers. Situated at 3,528 metres, it offers a breathtaking view of the mountainous region. However, navigating this pass can be extremely difficult due to heavy rain and unpredictable landslides.
The Kunzum Pass stands at an altitude of 4,551 metres, making it one of the most treacherous roads globally. This strategically positioned pass connects the Kullu and Lahaul valleys with the Spiti Valley. It is a favoured route for motorbike enthusiasts and trekkers. Every year, this passage is closed during the severe winter months.
Nathu La is located about 54 kilometres from Gangtok and 400 kilometres from the Tibetan capital, Lhasa. It was once part of the ancient Silk Road and sits at an altitude of 4,310 metres. The journey to Nathu La is challenging due to massive landslides and the lack of a solid road, but the snow-clad Himalayan mountain ranges offer unforgettable moments. The evening skyline in the distance is particularly mesmerising. It's essential to check with the Sikkim Tourism office in Gangtok for the latest road conditions, weather and permits. Nathu La is usually closed during the winter months due to heavy snowfall and harsh weather conditions.
