The main beach in Mui Ne stretches along the South China Sea and is ideal for surfing from November to March when the winds create waves suitable for novice and experienced surfers. In addition to surfing, Mui Ne is an excellent location for various water activities due to its shallow waters and sandy beaches. The top surfing spot in Da Nang is My Khe Beach, commonly known as "China Beach." This beach is particularly beginner-friendly due to its clear waters and consistent waves. The best time to surf at My Khe is from September to March when the waves typically range from three to six feet. These conditions are ideal for both easy rides and more challenging sessions. The surf community in Da Nang is welcoming and tight-knit, featuring several surf shops and schools that offer affordable lessons and rental equipment. While experienced surfers can take on larger swells during the peak season, beginners will find gentler waves in the early morning. The best surfing location in Nha Trang is Bai Dai Beach, approximately 25 kilometres from the city centre. Located about 100 kilometres from Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau is a popular weekend getaway for locals, thanks to its vibrant beaches and relaxed atmosphere. From December to March, Vung Tau offers consistent, beginner-friendly waves, creating excellent conditions for surfing. The main surfing beach in the area is Back Beach (Bai Sau), where the waves typically range from two to four feet. Vung Tau's close proximity to the city makes it convenient for short visits, and there are many surf schools and rental shops available. Local surfers eager to share advice and experiences often visit this area, providing a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the local Vietnamese surf culture.
One of Vietnam's lesser-known yet increasingly popular surf scenes is Phan Rang, located between Nha Trang and Mui Ne. This destination offers tranquility and more challenging waves, making it an excellent choice for surfers seeking consistent swells and uncrowded beaches. Phan Rang is better suited for intermediate and advanced surfers, as the waves can be larger and more powerful than those in Mui Ne or Nha Trang. While there are great surfing spots throughout the year, the best time to surf in Phan Rang is from November to March. The nearby Nui Chua National Park, with its stunning landscapes and unique coastal rock formations, provides a serene backdrop for surfing. Since Phan Rang is still developing as a surfing destination, bringing your own board, if possible, is advisable, as rental options may be limited.
Following local beach regulations and surf etiquette while surfing in Vietnam is important. Although most locals are welcoming and friendly to visitors, showing respect and patience can make a positive difference.
