Cycling and exploring the rugged terrain of the Western Ghats around Pune is an exhilarating experience. The region offers excellent trails for mountain biking. Some must-try trails include Vetal Tekdi on the outskirts of Pune and Temghar Valley. You shouldn't miss the Sinhagad trails, Symbiosis Hill tracks, and the purpose-built Spirit of Mowgli Pump Track and Café for cycling. For those interested in aerosports, the gliding centre in Hadapsar, established in 1951 under the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), is worth a visit. You can also enjoy a refreshing swim in the lakes or experience the thrilling adventure of waterfall abseiling at Vihigaon Falls, where the descent combines with pounding water.
Located in Raigad, the Karnala Fort is set amidst beautiful rolling hills, offering an exhilarating adventure getaway. The fort, which dates back to the 12th century, consists of two levels. A long series of steps lead to the ornate doorway of the upper fort, while more steps lead to the 45m basalt pillar, providing a challenge for rock climbers. The base of the fort features expansive water cisterns and a network of caves with stunning views. The Karnala Bird Sanctuary, home to enchanting songbirds such as the paradise flycatcher and magpie robin, attracts many birdwatchers throughout the year. The sanctuary offers two trekking options—a well-defined, motorable trail and a rugged track, both ascending uphill and converging at the base of the 14th-century fort.
Sandhan is a beautiful canyon in the Sahyadri mountain range and part of Maharashtra's Western Ghats. Water erosion shaped the valley, so waterfall abseiling is a favourite activity here. It is dubbed the "valley of shadows" due to the tall rock walls on both sides, which inhibit sunlight. Sandhan Valley is also renowned as Maharashtra's premier destination for extreme adventure sports. You can enjoy trekking through the narrow gorge, rappelling down sheer rock faces, and navigating natural rock formations. The Sandhan Valley trek is moderate to challenging and commences at Samrad village. Visitors can enjoy the clear skies at night, which is a rare treat for city dwellers.
Kamshet stands out as one of Maharashtra's top destinations for aero-sports tourism. It is a great spot for paragliding, with numerous tour outfitters and schools to choose from. Popular launching spots include the Shinde Wadi Hills, Kondeshwar Cliff, Tower Hill, and Shelar. Additionally, tourists can enjoy treks to the Lohagad Fort, Shelar, Tower Hill, Shinde Wadi Hills, and Kondeshwar Temple.
