Greece offers many beautiful sights to explore. One must-see attraction is visiting ancient Greek monasteries in picturesque countryside locations. Some are perched atop steep rocks, while others are nestled in lush green valleys and olive groves. Many of these monasteries were constructed centuries ago by hermits and monks seeking refuge from religious persecution. One of the most stunning is the monastery of Hosios Loukas. Let's look at why you should add this monastery to your Greece itinerary.
Just 120 km northwest of Athens, near the charming town of Distomo, stands this historic walled monastery celebrated for its exceptional Byzantine art and architecture. It is regarded as one of the most important monastic complexes in the Greek Orthodox world. Its origins trace back to the early 10th century when this remarkable monastery, which translates to "Esteemed Saint Luke," was established by the revered Greek monk Loukas. Following his passing in AD 953, he was laid to rest in the monastery's crypt.
Hosios Loukas is an astonishing example of Byzantine architecture and artistry, situated in a serene valley adorned with lush olive and almond trees. Nestled on the scenic slopes of Mount Helicon, this UNESCO World Heritage Site stands as a fine example of Middle Byzantine architecture and art. The monastery is renowned for its intricate mosaics, stunning frescoes, and impressive architectural features, offering visitors a profound insight into Byzantine religious and cultural traditions.
In 1990, the Hosios Loukas monastery, alongside the Daphni and Nea Moni of Chios monasteries, was officially designated as having outstanding universal value by UNESCO. Despite their geographic separation, these three monasteries share the same architectural style and aesthetic characteristics. The churches are specifically built on a cross-in-square plan with a large dome supported by squinches, defining an octagonal space. During the 11th and 12th centuries, they were adorned with remarkable marble works and mosaics on a gold background, representing the 'second golden age of Byzantine art'.
UNESCO recognises these three monasteries as excellent examples of construction representing the middle period of Byzantine religious architecture. Nea Moni features a simple design, with an octagonal church with no additional spaces. On the other hand, Hosios Loukas and Daphni are more complex, with a central octagonal space surrounded by a series of bays that form a square. This more intricate structure establishes a hierarchy of volumes and functions, allowing for the implementation of an extensive iconographic and decorative plan. Similar churches with such elaborate designs include Christianou near Kyparissia, Panaghia Likodimou in Athens, and Saint Sophia in Monemvasia.
The Eastern Orthodox monastery maintains an authentic and spiritual atmosphere. Inside the fortified monument, you can explore magnificent Byzantine churches from the 11th century and well-preserved imperial structures. The monastery's main church, the Katholikon, contains a shrine to Loukas, a large crypt, and notable mosaics and wall paintings. Other impressive buildings on the monastery grounds include two-story and three-story cells, the Refectory, an underground cistern, a bell tower, the older church of Panagia, the Agia Varvara crypt where the tomb of Osios Loukas lies, and other auxiliary buildings.
One of the most striking features of the monastery is a spectacular gold mosaic of the saint at the entrance. The interiors are decorated with numerous well-preserved frescoes and mosaics. Beneath the Katholikon is a crypt where the saint's remains are located. The landscape surrounding the Monastery of Hosios Loukas may not be as breathtaking as Meteora, but its green and golden valleys filled with flowering almond and olive trees evoke harmony and well-being.
The Eastern Orthodox monastery is located in a beautiful and remote area of Greece on the slopes of Mount Elikonas near Mount Parnassus. There are several remarkable attractions near the monastery.
You can explore Delphi, an ancient sanctuary located at the base of Mount Parnassus, which was once considered the centre of the world. At Delphi, you can visit the Temple of Apollo, where the Oracle delivered prophecies, and stroll along the Sacred Way, lined with ancient monuments, temples, and treasuries.
Also factor in Meteora. Nestled amidst the rugged landscapes of central Greece, the monasteries of Meteora stand as a testament to human perseverance and architectural ingenuity. These awe-inspiring structures are perched on towering rock formations, offering a breathtaking juxtaposition of natural beauty and human craftsmanship. The cliffs provide a dramatic backdrop, framing the monasteries and creating a sense of timeless wonder. Among these monasteries, the Holy Trinity Monastery holds a special place in popular culture, having been featured in the iconic 1981 Bond film "For Your Eyes Only". In the movie, the monastery is the backdrop for a gripping scene in which Bond embarks on a daring ascent to retrieve a stolen ATAC device, showcasing the monastery's unique blend of tranquillity and dramatic beauty.
The monastery is open to the public daily from 9 am to 5 pm in winter, and 9 am to 6 pm in summer. The monastery entrance is complimentary, while the museum charges € 3 (INR 280).
The best way to travel from Athens to Hosios Loukas is by train, which takes 1 hour and 56 minutes and costs between $35 and $50. Alternatively, you can take the bus from Athens or drive the 104.2 miles from Athens to Hosios Loukas, which takes approximately 2 hours.
The best time to visit Greece is during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October). The weather is pleasant during these months, with mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and lower prices compared to the peak summer season. Spring brings blooming landscapes and comfortable conditions for sightseeing, while the fall offers warm seas for swimming and exploring the islands. Summer (July and August) is excellent for beach lovers but can be crowded and hot. Winter (November to March) is off-season but ideal for those interested in exploring Greece’s historical sites without the tourist rush.
