This year, Hungary is set to host Europe's grandest fireworks display on August 20, an event that promises to be one of the largest pyrotechnic extravaganzas in the world. This dazzling celebration not only marks the founding of Hungary but also honours St. Stephen, the country's first king from the Árpád dynasty. Known as St. Stephen's Day, this event is a cornerstone of Hungarian national pride and a significant highlight on the country's cultural calendar, drawing substantial interest and participation.
The fireworks show will unfold along a breathtaking five-kilometre stretch of the Danube, from Petőfi Bridge in the north to the southern tip of Margaret Island. Spectators on both sides of the river will enjoy nearly identical panoramic views of this mesmerising spectacle. In addition to the fireworks, a spectacular light show will be projected onto the Parliament building, adding to the grandeur of the evening. The display will feature an astounding 45,530 separate pyrotechnic effects, meticulously launched from three of Budapest's iconic Danube bridges: Liberty, Elisabeth, and Margaret Bridges. This colossal display will require 300 kilometres of electric wiring to power the fireworks, all of which meet stringent EU safety standards. The entire show will be managed by a sophisticated digital control system, ensuring precise coordination and safety, with emergency stop functions in place to protect both the audience and the city.
Beyond the awe-inspiring fireworks, the celebrations will offer a wealth of activities and experiences for visitors of all ages. In the heart of Budapest on the Pest side, the Csárda Festival will feature a delightful array of traditional Hungarian cuisine. On the Buda side, between the Chain Bridge and Dobrentei Square, Hungarian Flavors Street will present an assortment of delectable dishes from the Carpathian Basin, including the much-anticipated national bread and cakes of the year.
For families, there will be numerous engaging programs and exhibits. The Holy Right Golden Train on Alkotmány Street promises to be a highlight, while the Pannonia ship will be open to the public throughout the weekend. The Festival of Folk Arts, one of Hungary's largest folk crafts festivals, will bring the historic atmosphere of traditional fairs to the Buda Castle district. History buffs will find the Heroes' Way on Tóth Árpád promenade in Buda Castle Hill particularly fascinating. Meanwhile, Millenáris Park will transform into a vibrant artists' garden, showcasing cutting-edge fashion and design.
Families with young children will especially enjoy Varázsliget, which returns to City Park (Városliget) this year. Here, little ones can explore King Stephen's courtyard and participate in the Prince and Princess Training School. Throughout the celebration, visitors will find food and beverages available at reasonable prices, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the festivities comfortably.
St. Stephen's Day is not only Hungary's national day but also a dynamic festival that reflects the nation's rich cultural heritage and historical significance. This year's celebrations are anticipated to exceed the impressive attendance record set in 2019, with a remarkable influx of both domestic and international tourists.
