Kazakhstan is a cultural and ecological treasure trove with major worldwide significance, thanks to its UNESCO World Heritage Sites. There are many overlooked treasures in Kazakhstan that will astound you. For instance, Shymkent. Once a thriving stop on the Silk Road, it is now one of Kazakhstan's largest cities. The name translates to "the city in the grass/turf." Founded in the 12th century, Shymkent was destroyed by Genghis Khan and later damaged by various nomadic tribes. Russia conquered it in 1864, making it an important trading centre.
There is a lot to do here with your family. You can check out the many parks, go on treks, indulge in water sports, and visit retro places that still hold on to the 70s charm, like the Cinema Bar, a club vibe with old Hollywood-style charm. And do not miss out on shopping at the many bazaars. We have out together a list of things to do in Shymkent for a memorable family trip.
This urban park opened in October 2011 to commemorate Kazakhstan's 20th anniversary of independence. The park's central entrance is ornamented with an arch, and there is a singing fountain and several floral displays throughout the grounds.
In the centre is a monument called Altyn Shanyraq, which represents the Kazakhstan people. It was made of 137 metal elements, each representing one of the 137 ethnicities who live in Kazakhstan. An iron pedestrian bridge connects the park to Ordabassy Square, symbolising the passage between the city's ancient past and its current history.
If you enjoy gorgeous architecture, you must visit the Shaikh Khalifa Mosque in Shymkent. One of Asia's largest mosques, it has a capacity of 6,000 worshippers. The mosque has an area of 8,000 square metres and includes a huge public library.
Spend the day walking around Arbat, a pedestrian zone on Beibitshilik Avenue in Shymkent. The zone includes benches, bike paths, and many trees like spruce, chestnut, and white birch. There are a few vendors selling souvenirs. In the evening, brightly coloured lit-up umbrellas hover over Arbat.
While in Shymkent, you can witness a traditional hunting contest and the national sport of Sayat, which involves hunting with golden eagles. Every year, berkutchi (golden eagle hunters) from all over the country gather for the tournament. In 2019, the Kazakh government expanded its Year of Youth programs to include eagle hunting centres, volunteer coordination, and self-defence courses. There are several eagle hunting facilities where trainers teach this ancient art and organise competitions to make eagle hunting an essential part of Kazakhstan's ethno-tourism.
If your kids are into water sports, hit up one of the water parks, like the Fontan Water Park in Shymkent, for a day full of adventure and try your hand at sports like flyboarding.
If you love nature and are up for adventure, don't miss out on visiting Susingen Lake in Sayram-Ugam National Park. The lake is a must-see, especially during the winter when it refills after the ice melts in June.
