“A Thousand Cuts” is a photographic study of the patterns of domestic abuse in the South Asian community. The metaphor highlights the cyclical nature of abuse, where each act chips away at the soul of the survivor. With an exhibit, workshop and in-person discussions, this project by Sujata Setia attempts to move outward from the social context to investigate the politics of abuse and coercive control. Each portrait features physical cuts, reflecting past trauma and the process of reclaiming power. The patterns that emerge on the portraits symbolise both submission and resistance, forming an internal dialogue for the survivor and a conversation with the viewer. Based on interviews with 21 South Asian women, which is ongoing, this photographic study captures the emotional processes that accompany the first public revelation of their private realities. Please note that “A Thousand Cuts” includes potentially triggering and/or sensitive material. After the workshop and panel discussion, there will be a sharing circle for those who would like to stay back to ask questions or decompress. There are two fun runs happening in Mumbai this weekend. The first is the "Sardar Patel: Run for Unity" event, a community-driven session split into 3-kilometre, 5-kilometre and 10-kilometre categories. It welcomes everyone from seasoned athletes to first-time runners to experience the exhilaration of racing through the scenic streets of Powai. “Flavours on your Fork” promises an evening of fun eating this weekend. Jake Dryan, a UK-based chef and food blogger, Satyajit Hange and Ajinkya Hange from India-based Two Brothers Organic Farms, and chef Mohit Savargaonkar are coming together for a “clean eating” event that does away with start-up lectures and bland food. Visitors are instead guaranteed an immersive session on good food and a cook-along that will put their culinary skills to the test.
