The iconic Hussain Sagar Lake, constructed in 1562 by Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah, is one of Hyderabad's most popular tourist destinations. This man-made lake spread over 5.7 square kilometres, connects the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The most striking feature of Hussain Sagar is the massive statue of Buddha that stands in the middle, offering a serene view, especially during sunset. Visitors can enjoy boating activities and stroll along Necklace Road, which surrounds the lake. The area has cultural festivals, making it a visual delight and a hub of activities. Durgam Cheruvu is often called the "Secret Lake" due to its secluded location, tucked away in the upscale area of Jubilee Hills. Located on the outskirts of Hyderabad, Osman Sagar, also known as Gandipet, was created in 1920 by damming the Musi River. This sprawling lake serves as a significant drinking water source for the city and offers an escape for visitors. The Gandipet Park by the lakeside is perfect for family outings, relaxing, enjoying the fresh air, and witnessing beautiful sunsets. Osman Sagar is also a popular picnic spot and has historical significance, with several old bungalows and guesthouses from the Nizam era dotting the area.
Just a short drive from Osman Sagar lies Himayat Sagar, another reservoir built to contain the overflow of the Musi River. It was constructed during the reign of Nizam VII and named after his son, Himayat Ali Khan. This artificial lake, built during the Nizam era, is surrounded by lush forests, making it an excellent spot for nature lovers. The calm waters reflect the surrounding greenery, creating an ideal relaxing environment. Shamirpet Deer Park is located close to the lake, allowing visitors to spot wildlife while enjoying a day out. The lake is also popular for picnics, birdwatching, and fishing. The nearby resorts make it a perfect weekend destination for city dwellers.
