Nestled at an altitude of about 950 metres above sea level is Sakleshpur, a hill station in Karnataka that has a pleasant climate throughout the year. Part of the Hassan district, it is about 220 kilometres away from Bengaluru. Its dense forests; shining rivers; waterfalls; and coffee, cardamom, pepper and areca nut plantations make it a favourable destination for nature lovers, trekkers and those seeking peace away from urban congestion.
Sakleshpur is often designated as the “Switzerland of Karnataka" because of its curved hills, cloudy mornings and pictorial views. Historically, it was an important part of the Hoysala Kingdom, whose influence can still be observed in the region’s architectural relics. Here’s your guide to the places to visit in Sakleshpur and the best time to go there.
The Manjarabad Fort, built by Tipu Sultan in 1792, is one of the best places to visit Manjarabad Fort if you are a history buff. It is a star-shaped fort that offers panoramic views of the hills and surrounding valleys. It was specially designed for military defence and allowed its guards to monitor the approach to the fort from far away. The climb up to the fort is comparatively easy, and it is a popular spot for photography.
If you are looking for magnificent views of the Western Ghats, the Bisle Viewpoint is one of the best place to visit in Sakleshpur. Located around 35 kilometres from Sakleshpur, the site offers views of three mountain ranges—Dodda Betta, Pushpagiri and Kumara Parvatha. On a clear day, you can also spot the valley where the Kumaradhara River flows. The viewpoint is part of the Bisle Reserve Forest, which is known for its rich biodiversity. The road leading toward Bisle is scenic, though a bit uneven, which adds to the sense of adventure.
The Hemavathi River is a tributary of the Kaveri. Flowing through Sakleshpur, visiting its banks for a nature walk or a picnic is one of the best things to do in Sakleshpur. The nearby Hemavathi Dam is another tourist sight where you can enjoy the peaceful surroundings and beautiful sunset.
If you are a trekking enthusiast, head to the Agni Gudda Hill. Also known as “Honey Hill,” it sits at a distance of 40 kilometres from Sakleshpur and 8 kilometres from the Byraveshwara Temple. It is the second highest peak in Karnataka and offers some of the best scenic views of the Western Ghats. Trekking to the Jenukal Gudda Hill is moderately challenging but the view of mist-covered hills and lush greenery makes it one of the best treks in Sakleshpur. The peak is especially beautiful during sunrise and sunset.
Located about 20 kilometres from Sakleshpur, the Mookanamane Falls is a secluded yet beautiful waterfall that is less crowded compared to other tourist sights. It is the ideal place for relaxation so dip your feet in the pool and soak in the peaceful ambience. Sakleshpur is about 220 kilometres from Bengaluru and can be reached via National Highway 75. The drive takes approximately 4-5 hours and the route passes through beautiful landscapes, making the journey as enjoyable as the destination. Winter is best time to visit Sakleshpur. The weather is cool and ideal for sightseeing, trekking and exploring the coffee plantations. The nights can be quite cold so it’s advisable to pack warm clothes. The monsoon season turns Sakleshpur into a lush green paradise. However, due to heavy rains, outdoor activities like trekking can be a bit challenging and the roads can be slippery. Summers in Sakleshpur are mild compared to other parts of Karnataka, with temperatures rarely exceeding 30°C. The evenings are pleasant, making it a good time for outdoor activities.
