The Ziro Festival is returning for its 11th edition in Arunachal Pradesh this September. Initiated by Bobby Hano and Anup Kutty in 2012, the music festival is expected to draw thousands of visitors worldwide. On the festival's Instagram page, a post says - “This year’s festival promises a diverse musical feast where you can discover new music and reconnect with the familiar.” The four-day event will be held from September 26 to 29 in the picturesque Ziro Valley, offering an unforgettable experience for all music enthusiasts and celebrating the diverse indigenous cultures and music of Northeast India. This year, the Ziro Festival of Music also promises an extraordinary line-up featuring an impressive array of Indian and international artists across three stages. From fusion act Kailasa and renowned actor, writer, and singer Piyush Mishra's Ballimaaraan to hip-hop artists Hanumankind and Dabzee and Bengaluru-based rockers Parvaaz, the festival is set to deliver unforgettable performances. International artists like Tuareg artist Tamikrest, Singapore post-rock band Amateur Takes Control, and Dutch jazz artist Saskia Laroo will also grace the stage. In addition to these acts, the festival will introduce a new stage dedicated to electronic music called the Takar stage, featuring exciting sets by artists such as New Delhi's Hamza Rahimtula with Rajasthan Folkstars, the capital's fusion-informed electronic DJ-producer Alboe, Mumbai experimentalist Spryk, and more. The festival has tantalisingly announced that the Takar stage will debut at a "new secret location" this time, adding an air of intrigue to the event.
The Ziro Festival of Music stands out as one of India's most eco-friendly festivals. The festival's commitment to sustainability includes working with locally sourced bamboo and other materials. This eco-friendly event puts waste management and reusable materials at the forefront. Till 2022, it had two uniquely crafted stages, Donyi (Sun) and Polo (Moon), made predominantly of bamboo by local artisans. Inspired by the animist Donyi Polo faith, prevalent in the region, the festival upholds a zero-plastic policy, urging attendees to contribute to a trash-free environment.
