The Kavaledurga fort, also called Bhuvanagiri, has a rich and intriguing history that dates back to the 9th century when it was originally constructed. It underwent significant renovations in the 14th century under the supervision of Cheluvarangappa, adding to its architectural significance. Kavaledurga held a prominent place in the region's history and was once known as Nagarakhand Banavasi Naad. Serving as an important stronghold during various historical periods, it was a key centre of power for the Nayakas of Keladi. Initially serving as feudatories under the Vijayanagara rulers, the Nayakas of Keladi later gained independence following the decline of the Vijayanagara kingdom. This transition in power further adds to the fort's historical significance.
Kavaledurga Fort is celebrated for its magnificent architecture. With three tiers of rock wall fortifications, this fort was a formidable stronghold of the Keladi Nayakas, an influential dynasty in Karnataka under the Vijayanagara Empire during the 16th century. Explore the fort's remains of a grand palace, bath, guard rooms, and weapon storage houses. Don't miss the opportunity to witness the well-preserved freshwater pond at the summit. Additionally, you can immerse yourself in the rich history by visiting the Srikanteshwara temple and Nandi Mantapa on the hill.
You can explore several intricately designed shrines dedicated to Virupaksha, Vijaya Vittala, Veerabhadra, Mallara, and Bhuvaneshwari within the fort. The ancient ruins and the remnants of an old palace offer a glimpse into the area's rich history. Additionally, visitors can also marvel at a mosque constructed by Venkatappa Nayaka. This historical site also provides a breathtaking vantage point to witness the sun setting over the majestic Arabian Sea.
You can embark on a hike to the top of Kavaledurga Fort and witness breathtaking views of the beautiful Sahyadri hills on clear days. The trek is around 2.5 km, and it is steep but worth it. Don't forget to pack some food and water for the journey. Exploring Kavaledurga can take two to three hours for physically fit individuals who can navigate the terrain. It's important to note that entry to Kavaledurga closes promptly at 5PM, so visitors should plan their visit accordingly. Since there are limited facilities available at Kavaledurga, it's advisable to bring essentials such as water and any other items needed for the visit. Additionally, there is a tea shop near the parking area for refreshments.
A hilltop retreat with sweeping views of the Western Ghats, Kodachadri is covered in verdant woods. Located at 1,411 feet above sea level and 115 kilometres from Shivamogga, the location draws many hikers from all over. The first part of the slope is extremely steep and challenging to climb. The slope declines almost perpendicularly for 4,026 feet on the west, reaching the South Kanara forests below. The sea appears nearby, and you can see ships passing by on a clear day.
From Shivamogga town, you can visit the famous Jog Falls, as they are about 2.5 hours away. After the monsoon season, the four cascades - Raja, Rani, Rocket, and Roarer - create a mesmerising spectacle down the verdant hillside, making the journey worth the effort.
