Kolaba Fort stands across Alibaug Beach, dominating the landscape and capturing the imagination of its visitors. Shivaji initiated its construction in the 1680s. The fort spans 900 feet in length and 350 feet in width, boasting 25-foot walls with 17 bastions. It houses numerous shrines, including the 18th-century Ganesh Panchayatan temple and an adjacent freshwater well.
Go trekking in Kanakeshwar Forest, a pristine woodland area near Alibaug. The forest teems with diverse flora and fauna, including rare plant species, birds, and reptiles making it an ideal destination for trekking, bird watching, and escaping the urban bustle. The forest is named after the ancient Kanakeshwar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, perched atop a hill at approximately 1,200 feet. To reach the temple, one must ascend around 700 steps. Alibaug boasts many beaches in and around the town of which the Alibaug Beach is the most popular. Akshi Beach is south of Alibaug, on the road to Revdanda, around 3 km from the town. Further south on the same route, 7 km from Alibaug, you'll find Nagaon. Versoli is located on the outskirts of Alibaug, approximately 2 km north of Alibaug Beach. Kihim, 11 km north of Alibaug, can be reached by turning left at Chondhi on the Alibaug-Rewas Road. Nagaon, Mandwa, and Kihim beaches offer watersports, including jet-skiing, parasailing, and banana boat rides.
Located around 55 km by road from Alibaug, this sea fort stands out as one of the most popular in Maharashtra. Enclosed by a formidable 40-foot high wall, powerful waves relentlessly crashing against it, the 17th-century fort commands attention from afar. Despite its current ruins, the remaining architecture is a testament to its strategic design. Spread over 22 acres, the fort holds the remains of palaces, residences, offices, mosques, and two impressive freshwater lakes. The quickest way to reach Alibaug is by taking the ferry service from the Gateway of India to Mandwa, which typically takes 45 minutes to an hour. The nearest railway station to Alibaug is located in Pen in Raigad district, 29 kilometers away. From there, you can take the local bus or book a cab to reach the town. Alternatively, you can drive from Mumbai to Alibaug via NH66, which takes around two and a half hours.
