The coastal region of Ratnagiri is a charming stop on the Konkan Railway route before Goa. Red earth glistens under the tracks, and dark green trees heavy with ripe mangoes rush past the train windows. Just 15 minutes from the station lies Ratnagiri's beautiful coastline, bordered by lush green hills. Three beaches flank the town, but it's advisable to avoid swimming as no lifeguards are present. A must-visit is Ratnadurg Fort, built by Maratha emperor Shivaji. The fort once extended across two hills, overlooking the stunning blue sea, but today, only crumbling walls remain. Within the remnants of the fort is the Sri Devi Bhagwati Mandir, which gives the fort its alternate name, Bhagwati Qila.
Also, be sure to visit Lokmanya Tilak’s house, known as Tilak Ali, which has been transformed into a museum. It showcases many photographs of Tilak and is a beautiful example of traditional Konkani architecture. Those familiar with Amitav Ghosh’s novel, "The Glass Palace" will recognise Ratnagiri as the setting for the story of the exiled Burmese king. Close to Thibaw Point, you'll find the Thibaw Palace, which features a watchtower offering a panoramic view of Ratnagiri. Ratnagiri is about 400km away by road from Mumbai and about 300km from Pune. Apart from Mumbai and Pune airports, Ratnagiri may also be approached from Goa's Manohar International Airport (about 200km away by road). However, taking a train is a more convenient option Ratnagiri is a key station on the Konkan Railway route.

To travel from Mumbai to Sawantwadi, you can opt for trains departing from Mumbai to Sawantwadi Road Railway Station, check bus services from Mumbai operated by MSRTC or private companies, or drive via NH48. Additionally, flying to Goa International Airport and proceeding to Sawantwadi is an alternative option.
Tarkarli, an enchanting coastal gem, had garnered recognition from The Sunday Times, London, which praised the beach as one of the finest in the world. The beach is a seemingly endless expanse of pristine white sand. The emerald waters gently lapping at the shore are elegantly framed by lush casuarina trees, creating a serene escape from the bustling world beyond. The picturesque drive from the charming town of Malvan to Tarkarli is breathtaking, with winding paths shaded by tamarind and coconut trees. Imagine lounging for hours in your hammock, enveloped by the soothing sounds of the waves. While wading in the water is safe, swimming is not advisable due to strong undercurrents, and the absence of lifeguards warrants caution. Not just beaches, Tarkarli also has backwaters where the Karli river meets the sea in Devbag. Nearby, the town of Malvan showcases Konkan life, with its vibrant jetty lined with fishing boats, charming traditional homes. Cycling is great for those eager to delve deeper into this idyllic locale. Rent a bicycle from one of the local shops and gracefully navigate the shaded streets. You can also hop on a fishing boat serving as a ferry from the tourist pier, whisking you away to the historic Sindhudurg Fort, where you will have an hour to explore the grandeur of this remarkable island fortress.
The nearest airport is Dabolim in Goa. Mumbai is nearly 500km by road. Kudal, on the Konkan railway route, is 45km by road.
Nestled about 500km from Mumbai and perched at 2,000 feet, this captivating town is the final hill station in Maharashtra before the Western Ghats gracefully slope down to the coast of Goa. To reach Amboli from Mumbai, travellers can drive, taking the scenic route via NH48 through Panvel, then Sawantwadi-Amboli Road. Alternatively, they can use buses or trains to reach Sawantwadi and proceed to Amboli by local transport. Goa's Dabolim Airport is also an option for air travel.
