Also known as the “Niagara Falls of India” due to its resemblance to the famous waterfall in North America, Athirapilly Waterfall has been featured in Bollywood movies such as Bahubali, Raavan, and Guru.
The name Hogenakkal originates from the Kannada words “hoge” meaning “smoke” and “kal” meaning “rock”. The name refers to the mist that rises from the falling water.
The waterfall is located in the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a biodiversity hotspot. It is the second-highest plunge waterfall in India, after Nohkalikai Falls.
