Each year, global media company Time Out releases an annual list of the "coolest streets in the world right now." The list for 2024 has been revealed, compiled by Time Out's global editorial team. The selection criteria used were not based on any urban design aspects but instead on the activities and experiences offered by the streets. They consider the opinions and insights of locals to highlight the must-see streets, roads, avenues, plazas, and boulevards in cities worldwide, where people can have a guaranteed good time. Here are the top 10 streets that provide a blend of local and global urban culture, fostering a strong sense of community.

Numero Uno In The List

Topping the 2024 list is Melbourne's High Street, which runs through the trendy suburbs of Northcote, Thornbury, and Preston, and is easily accessible via the 86 tram line. It stands out for its unique and diverse local businesses, making it truly "cool."

Hong Kong's vibrant Hollywood Road was established in 1844

Hong Kong's Hollywood Road, one of the oldest streets in the city, takes the second place. This vibrant street in Central and Sheung Wan was established in 1844, pre-dating LA's famous entertainment district. The third spot goes to East Eleventh in Austin, Texas, known for its incredible food, excellent coffee, a historic venue, and a backyard stage.

The Top 10

Rua da Boavista in Lisbon

The others in the top 10 are Guatemala Street in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Commerical Drive in Vancouver, Canada; Jalan Petaling in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Rua da Boavista in Lisbon, Portugal; Arnaldo Quintela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Chazawa-dori in Tokyo, Japan; and Consell de Cent in Barcelona, Spain.

Those That Stand Out

Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown has recently been recognised as one of the top 30 coolest streets in the world. It has been ranked sixth on the list, and the popular Petaling Street has been highlighted for its old temples and colonial shophouses. These shophouses are home to some of KL's newest drinking and dining joints, as well as a shopping haven.

Two streets in Portugal make the list: Rua da Boavista in Lisbon is seventh, and Rua Sá de Noronha in Porto is 16th. "Few neighbourhoods in Lisbon have lived as many lives as Cais do Sodré, a neighbourhood that has surpassed its nightlife legacy and become a place to shop locally or have a family brunch and dinner with friends," highlights Vera Moura, director of Time Out Portugal.
