OT Staff

The ancient oasis city of AlUla has recently been awarded the prestigious International Dark Sky Park Certification, recognising its pristine night skies as among the top 5 per cent of dark sky quality locations globally for stargazing and astro-tourism. The International Dark Sky Places (IDSP) Programme, established in 2001, aims to promote the preservation and protection of dark sites by encouraging communities, parks, and protected areas worldwide to implement responsible lighting policies and engage in public education efforts. This award-winning programme recognises and supports locations committed to minimising light pollution and safeguarding the beauty of the night sky for current and future generations. In 2007, the Mont Mégantic Observatory in Quebec became the first site certified as an International Dark Sky Reserve by Dark Sky.

The certification from the globally renowned US-based organisation DarkSky International confirms AlUla's commitment to minimising light pollution, preserving and protecting the nighttime environment, and ensuring that its breathtaking skies remain crystal-clear for stargazers. With numerous sprawling open-air locations and favourable weather conditions after nightfall, visitors to AlUla can escape into the cosmos, marvel at the celestial wonders, and connect with the ancient heritage of celestial navigation that once guided travellers.
