The village panchayat of Calangute in North Goa has announced new measures to enhance tourism management and uphold cleanliness standards. Calangute, renowned for its picturesque beach and vibrant atmosphere, has become a must-visit destination for travellers exploring Goa's coastal charm.

Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira disclosed that the village panchayat is set to convene a meeting to discuss the implementation of these regulations. Under the proposed resolution, tourists visiting Calangute will be required to present proof of hotel reservation upon entry or pay a nominal tax at designated entry points.

The decision to impose an entry tax aligns with the panchayat's commitment to promoting responsible tourism practices

"This initiative aims to address the challenges posed by large groups of tourists arriving in vehicles, often leaving behind litter without any regard for cleanliness," Sequeira remarked. He emphasised the importance of maintaining the village's pristine environment and alleviating traffic congestion for the benefit of local residents and visitors alike.

The decision to impose an entry tax aligns with the panchayat's commitment to promoting responsible tourism practices and attracting discerning travellers who appreciate and respect the destination's natural beauty.

Sequeira clarified that these regulations are specifically targeted at tourists and will not impact local residents. Drawing inspiration from similar initiatives implemented elsewhere, such as the entry tax system in Mahabaleshwar town, Maharashtra, the panchayat aims to emulate successful strategies to manage tourism effectively.

"We are inspired by the success of the Mahabaleshwar Municipal Council and seek to implement similar measures to ensure the sustainable development of Calangute," Sequeira affirmed.

Once approved, the resolution is expected to be enforced during the upcoming tourist season, commencing in October. By prioritising cleanliness and enhancing visitor experiences, Calangute endeavours to uphold its reputation as a premier destination for travellers seeking sun, sand, and sea in the heart of Goa.
