OT Staff

The city of Hyderabad is celebrated for its rich history, diverse cuisine, and array of experiences, attracting tourists from around the globe. The city is renowned for its iconic landmarks, including the Charminar and Golconda Fort, which recount tales of the illustrious Nizams who once reigned here. Hyderabad served as the common capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh following the bifurcation of undivided Andhra Pradesh in 2014. However, starting from June 2, 2024, the city will exclusively serve as the capital of Telangana.

Not A Joint Capital

The state of Andhra Pradesh was separated into Telangana and Andhra Pradesh following the approval of the AP Reorganisation bill in Parliament in 2014. The formation of Telangana state fulfilled a long-standing demand, and statehood. And Hyderabad was designated as the capital of both states for a period of 10 years.

"On and from the appointed day (June 2), Hyderabad in the existing State of Andhra Pradesh, shall be the common capital of the state of Telangana and the state of Andhra Pradesh for such period not exceeding ten years," said the AP Reorganisation Act. "After the expiry of the period referred to in sub-section (1), Hyderabad shall be the capital of the State of Telangana and there shall be a new capital for the State of Andhra Pradesh".

Reclaiming Buildings And Assets

As Hyderabad ceases to be the joint capital, the Telangana government anticipates acquiring over 55 prime buildings from the Andhra Pradesh government in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Now that the city will be exclusively under Telangana, the Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has instructed officials to reclaim buildings such as the Lake View government guest house in Hyderabad, which were previously allotted to Andhra Pradesh.

Over the decade since 2014, Andhra Pradesh had effectively managed its administration and assembly proceedings from buildings in Hyderabad before establishing a capital city. As part of the agreement, a section of the Secretariat complex and multiple buildings in Hyderabad were allocated to Andhra Pradesh, ensuring smooth administrative operations. The Lake View Guest House, situated near Raj Bhavan at Somajiguda, functioned as the camp office for the Andhra Pradesh chief minister.
