In a virtual ceremony on March 7, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the "Tribal Cultural Experience" project in the Chumoukedima district of Nagaland. This initiative, operating under the Ministry of Tourism, is designed to offer visitors a unique insight into the rich tribal culture at the Midway Retreat in Tsiepama village, nestled between the state capital, Kohima, and the commercial hub, Dimapur.
The Tribal Cultural Experience promises an immersive journey, allowing tourists to reside in traditional cottages, delve into the distinctive culture and traditions of the Naga people, and savour the delectable Naga cuisine, according to officials.
The virtual inauguration by PM Modi, conducted from Srinagar, marked the commencement of the project, along with 53 other initiatives across the country, forming part of the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme initiated by the Ministry of Tourism. The live screening of the event in the Tourism Department's presence, along with various state government officials, added to the significance of the occasion.
Expressing the need for Nagaland to leverage its potential in the tourism sector, State Tourism Commissioner and Secretary I Kitto Zhimomi acknowledged the completion of projects in six districts under the first phase of the Swadesh Darshan scheme. As the second phase unfolds in Niuland and Chumoukedima districts, Zhimomi expressed hope that the Ministry of Tourism will allocate funds to extend the initiative to the remaining eight districts of the state.
Zhimomi highlighted the employment opportunities generated by these projects in the hospitality sector. Kejaroko Pieru, President of the Nagaland Association of Tour Operators, emphasised the importance of adequate facilities and infrastructure for the success of tourism in rural and remote destinations like Nagaland. Pieru emphasised that tourism development should focus on creating picturesque spots, empowering local communities, preserving cultural heritage, and establishing sustainable livelihoods.
Seyievizo Visezuo, Chairman of the Tsiepama Village Council, assured the department of full cooperation in realising the objectives of this transformative project.
