Electric Air Taxis Set To Transform Urban Travel In India

OT Staff

In a partnership set to redefine urban transportation, InterGlobe Enterprises, the parent company of India's leading airline, IndiGo, has joined forces with US-based Archer Aviation to introduce electric air taxis to the Indian market by early 2026. The service aims to reduce travel time and congestion in major cities drastically.

Archer Aviation, renowned for its innovative electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, will supply 200 cutting-edge planes for the venture. Each eVTOL can accommodate four passengers and a pilot, promising swift, noise-minimised journeys akin to helicopters but with enhanced safety features.

The collaboration will focus on major metropolitan hubs such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Commuters can expect a seamless experience, with the Delhi-Gurugram route projected to take just seven minutes, compared to the arduous 90-minute journey by car. The cost of this futuristic commute is estimated to range from INR 2,000 to 3,000.

Adam Goldstein, Founder and CEO of Archer Aviation, revealed that the company is in advanced discussions with regulatory bodies such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the US, with certification expected next year. Following this, India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will oversee the certification process, paving the way for commercial operations.

The joint venture will leverage InterGlobe's extensive network and resources, with plans to collaborate with local partners for seamless integration into India's aviation landscape. Discussions regarding infrastructure requirements, including vertiports and launchpads, are underway to support the eVTOL operations.

Furthermore, Archer Aviation is committed to expanding its manufacturing capabilities. A US-based facility will initially produce up to 650 planes, scaling up to 2,000 in the future. Goldstein affirmed the company's interest in exploring manufacturing opportunities in India, signalling a potential avenue for local job creation and technological advancement.
