In a significant development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated Sudarshan Setu, marking the opening of India's longest cable-stayed bridge at 2.32 km. The bridge links Beyt Dwarka island to mainland Okha in Gujarat's Devbhumi Dwarka. Constructed at INR 980 crore, the 4-lane bridge includes a central double-span cable-stayed portion of 900 meters and a 2.45 km long approach road.

The iconic structure facilitates transportation and emerges as a major tourist attraction for Devbhumi Dwarka. Its inauguration marks a positive shift for pilgrims and travellers, replacing the reliance on boat transport with a modern and efficient infrastructure.

About Sudarshan Setu

According to the official press release, the bridge features a distinct design, incorporating a footpath adorned with verses from Shrimad Bhagavad Gita and images of Bhagwan Krishna on both sides. Additionally, solar panels on the footpath generate one megawatt of electricity.

Better Commute

Formerly known as the Signature Bridge, the Sudarshan Setu is significant as part of PM Modi's "Viksit Bharat" vision for development. Initiated by the Centre in 2017, the bridge aims to improve transportation, particularly for devotees travelling between Dwarka and Beyt-Dwarka. Previously, pilgrims relied on boat transport to reach Beyt Dwarka.

With a width of 27.20 meters and footpaths measuring 2.50 meters on both sides, the bridge provides a safe passage for pedestrians and vehicles. It is strategically located and connects the Okha mainland with Beyt Dwarka, an island close to the Okha port. Beyt Dwarka, approximately 30 kilometres from Dwarka town, is home to the renowned Dwarkadhish temple dedicated to Lord Krishna.

Getting There

Reaching Okha in Gujarat's Dwarka is facilitated by various modes of transportation. The Sudarshan Setu bridge further enhances connectivity to Okha from mainland Gujarat. Travellers can use Jamnagar Airport for air travel. The Okha railway station connects with major cities, while well-maintained roads allow access by buses and private vehicles.
