An illustrated map has been doing the rounds of social media feeds these days. It showcases the wildlife of Odisha in gorgeous illustrations.
Created by visual designer Sudarshan Shaw, the Wildlife Map of Odisha has elements sourced from the folk art of pattachitra.
The Asian elephant, Indian pangolin, Bengal tiger, Irrawaddy dolphin, spotted deer, fishing cat and many other animals can be seen on the map which also has information about the indigenous tribes of Odisha and its wildlife spots.
For instance, the indigenous Kandha tribe of Odisha can be spotted on the map. The royal descendants of the mountain god and the protector of streams, their deep reverence for the hills shows in every aspect of their lives. In a recent study it was found that the tribe gather 200 different kind of foods from the forests and harvest almost hundred crops. For centuries the tribe has helped maintain the biodiversity of their forest where tigers, leopards and sloth bears roam around.
In one part of the map you can see one of the oldest matriarchal society in India, the Bonda tribe who reside in the hills of Malkangiri. They are believed to have migrated from Africa and are considered to be the first forest settlers of India.
Another part showcases the 'Believers of the Sun', the Munda tribe, who started off as nomadic hunters and are now involved in agriculture and labour.
