Madhya Pradesh Welcomed Record-Breaking 112 Million Visitors In 2023

The state of Madhya Pradesh has set a new tourist record after it welcomed over 110 million travellers in 2023, thus establishing itself as a premier tourist destination of India.

Renowned for its rich cultural heritage, glorious history, breathtaking natural beauty, diverse wildlife and spiritual experiences, the latest figures surpass the 89 million visitors recorded in 2019, the last year before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ujjain, one of India's holiest cities, emerged as the most popular tourist destination in the state with over 52.8 million pilgrims and tourists stepping foot inside the city. Five out of the top 10 most visited destinations in the state were well-known religious sites like Ujjain, Maihar, Chitrakoot, Omkareshwar and Salkanpur. Landmark projects like the Mahakal Lok in Ujjain and the Ekatma Dham in Omkareshwar have also played a pivotal role in attracting more visitors.

Sheo Shekhar Shukla, the managing director of the MP Tourism Board said that, "The record-breaking tourist arrivals are a testament to Madhya Pradesh's immense appeal as a diverse and enriching travel destination. Our unwavering focus on developing infrastructure, promoting religious tourism and showcasing our unique cultural heritage has been instrumental in attracting visitors from across India and the globe. We are committed to further enhancing our tourism offerings and ensuring that Madhya Pradesh remains a top choice for travellers seeking memorable and enriching experiences."

The state caters to a wide range of travellers from history buffs and nature lovers to spiritual seekers and adventure enthusiasts. It offers a wide range of attractions like ancient forts, temples, wildlife sanctuaries and vibrant cultural festivals.

According to Shukla, “The surge in tourism has had a positive impact on Madhya Pradesh's economy [by] generating employment opportunities, boosting local businesses and contributing to overall infrastructure development."

The 10 most visited cities in the state last year were Ujjain, Maihar, Indore, Chitrakoot, Omkareshwar, Jabalpur, Salkanpur, Narmadapuram, Raisen and Bhopal.
