The escape that cinema offers is unparalleled since it holds the power to take us places without changing our physical location. Films whisk us away on a whimsical carpet ride, inviting us to embark on a visual journey that dazzles our senses and ignites our imagination. Whether you are a movie buff or not, there is no denying the fact that through this engaging art form, we often find ourselves suspended in a realm where dreams merge with reality and where our mundane worries fade into insignificance.

In a creative endeavour to elevate its tourism sector, the Kerala government is set to unveil a remarkable initiative that will showcase the picturesque locales featured in popular movies, drawing inspiration from the silver screen to entice travellers. Renowned filmmaker Mani Ratnam has pledged his support to the government's 'Cinema Tourism Project,' which aims to captivate tourists with the allure of these iconic filming locations. The Kerala Tourism Department recently revealed the exciting details of this venture, underscoring the collaborative efforts between the noted filmmaker and the state authorities.

Cinema Tourism Project

With a focus on prime locations that have left an indelible mark on the hearts of moviegoers, the project aims to enthral visitors with the magic of these enchanting settings scattered across different parts of the state. During a meeting with the State Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas, Ratnam expressed his commitment to endorsing the mesmerising locales that have charmed audiences with his popular box office hits.

The grand launch of the Cinema Tourism Project will be held at the historic Bekal Fort in the picturesque district of Kasaragod. This breathtaking location served as the backdrop for certain scenes in Mani Ratnam's acclaimed film 'Bombay'. Adding to the excitement, the actors from the movie are also expected to grace the event, infusing it with star-studded glamour and amplifying the impact of this ambitious undertaking.

Aims of the Project

The Cinema Tourism initiative aims to transport visitors back in time, inviting them to explore the nostalgic settings that have become synonymous with these cinematic masterpieces. By inviting tourists to tread the same paths as their favourite characters, Kerala aspires to create an immersive experience that seamlessly blends the realms of reel and reality.

Mani Ratnam, a maestro known for his cinematic gems such as 'Roja', 'Bombay', and 'Dil Se', expressed deep appreciation for this pioneering project during his discussions with Minister Riyas. Having frequently chosen Kerala's breathtaking landscapes as the canvas for his artistic vision, the acclaimed filmmaker's support and involvement are poised to significantly boost the Cinema Tourism initiative.
